Met Police Impersonators Target Cryptocurrency Account Holders

Police in North Wales are warning cryptocurrency account holders about a new scam where fraudsters pose as Metropolitan Police officers. In one recent case, a caller claimed to be a Detective Chief Inspector from the Met Police contacting the recipient about alleged issues with their cryptocurrency account.

The call was followed by a spam email designed to make the scam appear legitimate. However, the intended victim recognized the warning signs and ended the call without engaging with the email.

North Wales Police advise that criminals often use authority and urgency to gain trust. They warn of unexpected contact about investments, cryptocurrency or bank accounts, requests for personal or financial information, pressure to act quickly, and emails containing links, attachments, or requests to verify account details.
