MetaMask Becomes Independent Consumer Company After Consensys Split

Consensys Software Inc., the company behind MetaMask, is undergoing significant changes. The firm has announced that it will split into two independent companies by the end of 2026: a rebranded MetaMask focused on consumer products and a new Consensys entity managing institutional infrastructure.

Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin stated that this separation will allow each company to have sharper focus. The existing company, which will be renamed MetaMask, will concentrate on the wallet and its consumer products. This move is expected to give the consumer strategy a more defined corporate structure.

The rebranded MetaMask business will maintain the app's security model and user access unchanged. Consensys emphasized that customers do not need to take any action due to the restructuring, assuring continuity for users. The company also confirmed that its developer-facing SDKs, APIs, and tooling will continue as before.

The newly formed Consensys entity will retain Linea and the protocol and enterprise infrastructure work that includes Besu and Teku. Mike Kriak will lead Consensys as chief executive, with David Cunningham serving as president.
