MetaMask Co-Founder Dan Finlay Exits Consensys After Decade of Burnout
Dan Finlay, co-founder of MetaMask, has left his position at Consensys after a decade. He cited burnout as the reason for his departure and expressed his desire to focus on time with his family.
MetaMask was launched in 2016 under Consensys as a browser-based Ethereum wallet. It later expanded into mobile and added support for non-EVM networks like Bitcoin and Tron, prediction markets, tokenized stocks, and a Mastercard-backed payment card that pays cashback in its native mUSD stablecoin.
Finlay highlighted the release of Advanced Permissions, built on the ERC-7715 standard, as one of his key contributions before leaving. This feature allows decentralized applications to request pre-authorized permissions from MetaMask users, removing the need for individual approvals. It has drawn attention from developers as a potential foundation for recurring on-chain payment systems.
No successor or structural change to MetaMask's development team was announced alongside Finlay's departure.
