MetaMask Exits Lido Validators Amid Infrastructure Compromise
MetaMask Staking has begun exiting its validators from Lido due to an infrastructure compromise. The incident was disclosed on September 30, and MetaMask stated on October 1 that it found no indication that wallets or customer funds were affected. The company called the exits 'precautionary.' Lido expects the last MetaMask-operated validators to be out by October 7, with an exit, withdrawal, and re-entry cycle of up to 45 days. stETH holders will face foregone rewards and possible downtime penalties.
Lido's infrastructure was compromised, and neither MetaMask nor Lido has revealed how it happened. The incident is the latest in a series of security breaches and losses in the cryptocurrency space. In the past month, CertiK counted $766.4 million in exploit and phishing losses, and Bitget's hot-wallet breach reached $387.5 million.
The security incident has raised concerns about the stability of the staking protocol and the potential consequences for stETH holders. The incident has also highlighted the importance of robust security measures in the cryptocurrency space.
