MetaMask Exits Thousands of Validators Amid Ongoing Security Incident

A recent security incident involving MetaMask has prompted the company to exit a large number of Ethereum (ETH) validators. The move, which is part of an ongoing investigation and remediation process, does not appear to pose an immediate threat to user wallets.

According to Lido protocol, which operates some of the affected validators, the incident resulted in 17,000 validators being exited, representing around 523,000 ETH. The exact cause of the incident remains unknown, but it is believed to have involved a compromise of MetaMask's infrastructure rather than direct access to user wallets.

The impacted validators include those operated through Lido protocol, and the process of exiting them could lead to downtime penalties if completed before the exit is finalized. The final validators are expected to complete the exit stage by October 7, 2026, although this does not necessarily mean that all ETH has been fully withdrawn by then.
