MetaMask Exits Validators Amid Security Incident
MetaMask, a leading cryptocurrency wallet developed by Consensys and led by Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin, has taken precautionary measures to exit affected validators in its non-custodial staking business amid a security incident affecting part of its infrastructure.
The company disclosed on September 30 that it is responding to the incident, stating no 'imminent threat' to the wallet has been identified at this time. However, MetaMask began taking measures to exit affected validators in coordination with customers and partners.
Lido, a liquid staking protocol, revealed that MetaMask Staking started exiting Ethereum validators operating on the Lido protocol on September 30. According to Will Shannon, a developer at Lido Finance, the last affected validators are expected to complete their exit by October 7.
The process involves submitting an exit request, a waiting period depending on network congestion, and finalization of the withdrawal transaction before Ethereum (ETH) is returned to users or the protocol. The Ethereum network currently has a large backlog of validators waiting to enter, and withdrawals from exited validators are expected to take up to approximately 45 days.
