MetaMask Removes Validators from Lido Staking Protocol Amid Security Incident
MetaMask, a self-custodial financial platform, has pulled its validators from the Lido staking protocol in response to a security incident. The company has assured users that customer funds are secure and that there is no indication that user wallets have been compromised. MetaMask has been operating its validators inside the largest Ethereum liquid staking protocol, Lido, but has now taken the precautionary measure of removing them. The company has stated that its staking is non-custodial, meaning it does not hold any withdrawal keys for the staking it runs on behalf of clients.
The security incident is still ongoing, with MetaMask focusing on 'containment and verification' steps. The company has not provided any details about the nature of the compromise, but has assured users that it will share more verified information as it becomes available. MetaMask has also reminded users to be cautious and not share their Secret Recovery Phrase or private keys with anyone, and to only interact with official channels.
MetaMask has positioned itself as the world's largest self-custodial financial platform, with over 100 million downloads in 190 countries and trillions of dollars in cumulative transaction volume. The company has also recently become independent, with a split from Consensys announced in September. The separation is set to finalize by the end of the year.
