MetaMask Security Incident Sees $1.4 Billion Validator Exodus
MetaMask, a popular Ethereum wallet provider, recently disclosed a security incident affecting part of its infrastructure. Despite this, Consensys founder Joseph Lubin reassured users that their wallets, private keys, and self-custodied assets were never at risk.
The incident occurred when an attacker diverted block rewards from MetaMask-operated validators, but the actual amount stolen was a fraction of a single Ethereum coin - about 0.36 ETH.
MetaMask pulled approximately $1.4 billion worth of staked Ethereum out of its validator operations as a precautionary measure, with around 17,000 validators holding about 523,000 ETH exiting staking duty.
