Metaplanet boosts Bitcoin holdings to 44,000 BTC with strategic sales and purchases
Metaplanet has significantly increased its Bitcoin holdings, ending the third quarter of fiscal 2026 with 44,000 BTC, worth approximately $3.8 billion. The company added 1,000 Bitcoin during the quarter, solidifying its position as the second-largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, trailing only Strategy, which owns around $73 billion worth of BTC.
The increase came after Metaplanet sold 10,000 BTC and later purchased 11,000 BTC in separate transactions. The company aimed to demonstrate that its Bitcoin treasury can be converted into cash while maintaining a larger Bitcoin position. The sale proceeds were held in cash, showing that Metaplanet could monetize its main balance-sheet asset without repaying liabilities.
Metaplanet conducted these transactions to improve its creditworthiness with rating agencies and fixed-income investors. The company argued that Bitcoin’s market liquidity alone may not be enough for creditors if an issuer is unwilling to sell its holdings. By completing an actual sale, Metaplanet sought to show both the ability and willingness to turn Bitcoin into cash to meet obligations or support other capital-management needs.
The company affirmed that Bitcoin remains its primary treasury reserve asset and plans to increase both total holdings and Bitcoin per share over the medium to long term. Metaplanet also reported over $5 million (¥848 million) in third-quarter revenue from its Bitcoin Income Generation business.
