Metaplanet Sells Bitcoin to Prove Liquidity Boosts Investor Confidence
Japanese Bitcoin treasury Metaplanet sold a portion of its Bitcoin holdings in the third quarter of 2026, not to reduce its exposure, but to showcase its liquidity to investors. The Tokyo Stock Exchange-listed company bought 1,000 Bitcoin in Q3, solidifying its position as the second-largest corporate Bitcoin holder globally. Metaplanet explained that the sale was strategic, aimed at demonstrating its ability to convert Bitcoin into cash to cover debt obligations, thereby strengthening investor confidence and expanding future financing options.
The company revealed it sold 10,000 Bitcoin for approximately $789.2 million before purchasing 11,000 Bitcoin for $948.7 million at an average price of $86,246. CEO Simon Gerovich emphasized that the transaction proved Metaplanet could exceed its outstanding debt obligations with cash reserves, reinvesting more Bitcoin than it sold.
Metaplanet’s stock saw a rise on Monday, reflecting broader market optimism as Bitcoin prices surged. The company’s pivot from its core hotel and technology business to Bitcoin accumulation in 2024 has positioned it as a major player in the corporate Bitcoin space, trailing only software firm Strategy, which holds 44,000 Bitcoin worth $3.7 billion at current prices.
