Metaplanet Shifts 85%-90% of Assets to Bitcoin in Strategic Overhaul
Metaplanet has made a bold strategic shift, committing 85%-90% of its total assets to Bitcoin while reserving 10%-15% for other investments. The company held 44,000 BTC as of September 30, 2026, valued at approximately $3.8 billion, according to CoinDesk. This allocation reflects a significant rebalancing of its portfolio, with the remaining portion set aside for potential mergers and acquisitions.
The firm's Bitcoin holdings saw notable activity in the third quarter, with Metaplanet selling 10,000 BTC for around $789.2 million and later repurchasing 11,000 BTC for about $948.7 million. The average purchase price for the repurchased BTC was $86,246, compared to the sale price of $78,925 per coin. These maneuvers were part of a broader strategy to optimize its Bitcoin position while maintaining financial flexibility.
Metaplanet has implemented strict capital management rules to mitigate risk, including capping Bitcoin-related borrowings below 10% of BTC net asset value. New common stock will only be issued when the market net asset value exceeds 1.0x. Additionally, the company has introduced a Net Interest Income Strategy aimed at generating recurring cash flow to support further Bitcoin accumulation.
The firm's Bitcoin Income Generation business reported $5.4 million in third-quarter revenue, a decline from previous periods but marking eight consecutive quarters of revenue generation. Metaplanet shares closed 2% higher on Monday at 297 yen, or about $1.88, reflecting investor confidence in the company's strategic direction.
