Metaplanet Stock Climbs as Bitcoin Holdings Reach 44,000 BTC
Metaplanet, a Tokyo-listed Japanese Bitcoin treasury firm, reported a 2.06% rise in its stock price to $1.87 on Monday after disclosing its third-quarter activities. The company ended Q3 with a total of 44,000 BTC, marking a net addition of 1,000 BTC for the quarter. This positions Metaplanet's Bitcoin holdings at a valuation of approximately $3.8 billion based on current market prices.
The company demonstrated liquidity by selling 10,000 BTC for roughly $789.2 million, averaging $78,925 per coin, and later repurchasing 11,000 BTC for about $948.7 million, averaging $86,246 per coin. This strategic move showcased the firm's ability to convert its Bitcoin reserves into cash and then rebuild its position, a key factor for potential lenders and investors.
Metaplanet's stock may attract increased scrutiny due to this transaction, as it highlights the company's capacity to manage its core asset flexibly. The firm also plans to allocate 10% to 15% of its assets to strategic investments aimed at generating recurring returns above funding costs. However, this strategy introduces execution risks if the portfolio returns do not cover the funding costs.
Bitcoin's trading near $86,000 on Monday, with resistance levels around $87,000 to $87,570, could influence the valuation of Metaplanet's holdings. Market participants are closely monitoring Federal Reserve minutes and the upcoming 10-year Treasury auction, as higher yields could limit risk appetite, while softer policy expectations may support Bitcoin demand.
