Metaplanet Stock Climbs as Bitcoin Holdings Reach 44,000 BTC in Q3
Metaplanet's stock climbed 2.06% to $1.87 on Monday after the Tokyo-listed Bitcoin treasury firm reported its third-quarter activity. The company ended Q3 with 44,000 BTC, marking a net increase of 1,000 BTC despite selling 10,000 BTC and later repurchasing 11,000 BTC. The treasury's value now stands near $3.8 billion, based on current Bitcoin prices.
The firm demonstrated liquidity by selling 10,000 BTC for roughly $789.2 million, averaging $78,925 per coin, then buying back 11,000 BTC for about $948.7 million, averaging $86,246 per coin. This transaction highlighted the company's ability to convert Bitcoin holdings into cash and rebuild its position, which could strengthen its credit profile.
Metaplanet's stock may attract closer scrutiny due to this strategic move, as it reshapes how investors view the company's reserves. The firm aims to allocate 10% to 15% of its assets to strategic investments targeting recurring returns above funding costs, potentially reducing reliance on equity issuance for future Bitcoin purchases.
Bitcoin's resistance near $87,570 could impact the valuation of Metaplanet's holdings. The stock's recent bounce places it between $1.70 support and $2.10 resistance, with volume slightly below average. The company's third-quarter revenue from its Bitcoin Income Generation business dropped 51% from Q2 and 65% year-over-year, highlighting the need for improved earnings contributions.
