Meta's Petal Cable Set to Revolutionize Crypto Trading with Durable Intercontinental Link
Meta's newly announced transatlantic subsea cable, Meta Petal, is expected to boost the crypto market by providing a durable intercontinental link for trading, validation, and settlement. Despite being years away from going live, the project contributed to a 7% rise in META shares as investors priced in long-term benefits for AI, cloud applications, and global data movement.
Meta Petal is not crypto-native but bodes well for blockchain infrastructure that sorely needs durable intercontinental links. It will join US East Coast facilities to France, building a proprietary high-capacity corridor into continental Europe. Meta has co-owned cables including 2Africa, Marea, and Anjana, as part of an ownership rather than leasing bandwidth plan.
The main players behind Meta Petal include Meta's infrastructure team, submarine manufacturing partners, and French landing hubs in Marseille, a major interconnection hub for Europe linking up via submarine cable to the Iberian Peninsula and Portugal. Global capacity has grown at more than 30% annually since 2018, but even transatlantic cable systems have typically operated in the 200- to 400-terabit range; a petabit-class cable represents a generational step up in fiber pair count and power feeding.
