The metaverse sector has matured significantly since its peak in 2021. A recent analysis of top metaverse crypto projects by Coin Gabbar identified five established names that have stood the test of time: Decentraland, The Sandbox, Axie Infinity, Render, and ApeCoin.

These projects were selected based on verifiable activity rather than social media hype or market buzz. The analysis considered four key factors: active development in 2026, ecosystem backing, on-chain relevance, and data transparency. Decentraland, for example, has a strong track record of creator-driven virtual worlds, while The Sandbox excels at brand-backed gaming experiences.

Axie Infinity stands out as a Web3 creature-battling game built on Ronin, but its chain carries the legacy of a 2022 hack that saw $625 million stolen. Render is a decentralized GPU compute network for AI and 3D rendering workloads, while ApeCoin is tied to the Bored Ape Yacht Club ecosystem and Yuga Labs' Otherside metaverse project.

The analysis also highlighted key developments in each project. Decentraland's governance proposal raised the Wearables and Emotes submission fee from $5 to $25, aiming to improve content quality by increasing the economic stake for creators.
