Mexican Cartels Harness Stolen Energy for Crypto Farms

Authorities in Mexico discovered a hidden crypto farm in the mountains of Puebla state, run by Mexican drug cartels. The operation took place in the city of Tlaola, near the Presa de Necaxa hydroelectric power plant, and allegedly received electricity through an illegal connection to its grid.

The site contained about 300 graphics processors, energy infrastructure, and satellite equipment. Federal authorities seized 80 medium-voltage terminals, a transformer, and eight satellite antennas during the raid.

This is not an isolated incident; since the beginning of 2025, four such farms have been found in the region. Security analysts believe that these facilities show how quickly cartels are adapting their schemes and moving part of their operations into the digital sphere.
