Mexico Digs Up 1032-Machine Cryptocurrency Mine Amid Electricity Theft Suspicions
The Mexican Navy has seized a clandestine cryptocurrency mine in Tlaola, Puebla state, Mexico. The operation took place on September 11 and revealed that the facility had 1,032 machines inside, more than triple the initial estimate of around 300 graphics processing units (GPUs).
The site was discovered through drone reconnaissance and located along a dirt road in a sparsely populated area. Residents reported hearing a constant mechanical hum coming from the building, which stood out due to its power draw.
No specific cryptocurrency has been identified as being mined at the facility. However, experts speculate that it could be Monero, given its optimal use of CPUs and ability to discourage specialized hardware.
The authorities have launched an investigation into electricity theft, with the Attorney General's Office leading the charge. The site allegedly tapped into the nearby hydroelectric grid, siphoning off large amounts of power without paying for it.
