Mexico Discovers Secret Cryptocurrency Mining Farm Near Hydroelectric Power Plant
A hidden cryptocurrency mining farm was discovered in Puebla, Mexico, near a hydroelectric power plant. The site, operated by an unknown entity, contained approximately 300 mining devices and had been secretly connected to the local grid without authorization.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of energy theft and possible money laundering activities linked to the farm. Authorities have seized equipment, including transformers, network connectors, and satellite antennas, which were used to access the internet.
The use of hydroelectric power for cryptocurrency mining is a significant concern as it can overload the grid and damage infrastructure. Puebla's public safety head, Francisco Sanchez, noted that such farms are difficult to hide due to increased load on the power grid and noticeable equipment noise.
The investigation has expanded to neighboring municipalities to identify potential other sites with unauthorized connections to the power grid.
