Miami-Dade Unveils 2K BTC Pension Pilot Amid Crypto Hub Ambitions
Miami-Dade officials are implementing a pension pilot that allows city employees to receive up to 2,000 BTC as part of their retirement benefits. This move is an extension of Mayor Francis Suarez's efforts to establish Miami as a global crypto hub.
The city launched the pilot after approving a resolution in February that directed the city manager to conduct feasibility studies on allowing employees to choose Bitcoin for compensation and residents to pay fees in cryptocurrency. Suarez, who personally took a BTC paycheck that gained 300 percent in value when it reached $120,000 earlier this year, believes this move will modernize the city's bureaucracy.
The city is relying on specialists from HR Benefits to manage the transition of retirement benefits during this municipal adoption. These specialists handle the necessary paperwork for employees to participate in the Deferred Retirement Option Program once they reach their normal retirement date.
