MiCA Regime Concentrates European Crypto Exchange Market
The European crypto exchange market has entered a new phase as the MiCA transitional period expired on July 1, forcing unauthorised providers to wind down their EU operations or obtain authorisation.
According to the CASP Tracker data, 84 of the world's 100 largest exchanges did not hold MiCA authorisation as of September 28. The transition has reduced the number of platforms able to serve European clients under the new framework.
Gate Europe is among the platforms that secured authorisation ahead of the deadline, receiving MiCA authorisation from the Malta Financial Services Authority on September 29, 2025. The firm subsequently passported its services across the European Economic Area.
The exchange has expanded its asset coverage since the start of the transition's final phase, announcing at least 68 new spot listings between June 16 and September 22, bringing its platform to 382 trading pairs covering approximately 190 assets. Gate Europe also reported deeper order books for its USDC markets.
Gate Europe CEO Giovanni Cunti said, 'The deadline did not shrink the European market, it concentrated it... Users can now compare licensed venues side by side on independent data, and the platforms that grow will be the ones that win on execution.'
