MiCA-Regulated Crypto Platforms Gain Investor Trust in Europe
European cryptocurrency users are increasingly trusting platforms authorized under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), according to Bitpanda’s co-chief executive, Christian Trummer. Speaking to media outlets, Trummer noted that MiCA has shifted investor preferences toward licensed providers, as users now favor regulated platforms over unlicensed ones.
Trummer contrasted this trend with the Crypto Twitter community’s focus on self-custody, stating that most users prefer relying on authorized intermediaries rather than managing their own private keys. He also criticized the uneven enforcement of MiCA, arguing that some firms continue operating in Europe without the required licenses, putting compliant businesses at a competitive disadvantage.
The comments come after MiCA’s transitional period ended on July 1, requiring all crypto-asset service providers to obtain proper authorization. The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has urged national supervisors to take action against unauthorized entities and has called for stronger supervisory tools to address firms outside the EU that target European investors.
Bitpanda has secured the necessary permissions, allowing it to continue cross-border operations under the new regime. Trummer’s remarks highlight the tension between licensed platforms benefiting from clearer standards and the competitive disadvantage they face if noncompliant rivals remain accessible. The future impact of MiCA will depend on how effectively regulators enforce the framework and close existing gaps.
