Michigan Residents Sound Alarm on Noisy Bitcoin-Mining Data Center
A bitcoin-mining data center in Dowagiac, Michigan, has been causing noise complaints from residents. The Hyperscale Data Inc.'s facility was built to mine cryptocurrency, but its cooling fans have generated noise levels between 50 and 62 decibels.
Residents compared the noise level to a jet engine or a constantly running indoor vacuum. Carlyn Morris, a resident, spoke during a city council meeting on September 14, 2026, about the issue. Mayor Pro Tem Danielle Lucas and other council members listened as residents complained about the high noise levels.
John Stewart, chief marketing officer for Hyperscale Data Inc., spoke at the meeting but did not directly address the noise concerns. The company has yet to provide a solution or mitigation plan for the noise issue. Dowagiac Mayor Patrick Bakeman acknowledged the concerns and said that the city would work with the data center to find a resolution.
The residents' complaints have been ongoing, with some displaying 'No Data Centers' signs in their front yards. The council will continue to discuss the issue and explore possible solutions.
