Microsoft's X Account Hacked for Crypto Scam Featuring Fabled Paperclip Assistant
Hackers have hijacked Microsoft's official X account to promote an unauthorized Clippy-themed cryptocurrency. The company's account, which has 13 million followers, was compromised on Thursday when it started following a Clippy crypto account and reposted one of its tweets.
The tech giant's profile picture was briefly changed to Clippy, a nod to the iconic paperclip assistant from Office 97 that was later removed due to intrusive pop-ups. About 30 minutes after the original posts were taken down, the account published a bizarre apology, which was also soon deleted.
Microsoft confirmed that it didn't publish any of those tweets and has secured the account. The company is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the unauthorized access.
