Microsoft's X Account Hacked to Promote Clippy Crypto Scam
Microsoft's X account was compromised yesterday in a hack that posted Clippy-themed cryptocurrency memes. The @Microsoft account, which has 13 million followers, reposted a tweet from a Clippy crypto account and changed its profile image to feature the iconic paperclip character.
The account also tweeted that it would bring back Clippy if it received 500,000 likes. However, Microsoft quickly secured the account and removed the unauthorized posts, stating that they did not support or authorize the cryptocurrency token.
This incident is not the first time a Microsoft X account has been hacked. In 2024, crypto scammers compromised @MicrosoftIndia to infect people with cryptocurrency wallet-drainer malware.
For users in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and elsewhere in the Middle East, this is a security incident rather than an official crypto offer. Microsoft emphasizes that it does not support or endorse any cryptocurrency or crypto-related token, and will take legal action to have the unauthorized token removed.
