Microsoft's X Account Hacked to Promote Clippy Meme Coin
Microsoft's official X account, which has over 13 million followers, was hacked by attackers who used it to promote an unofficial cryptocurrency tied to Clippy, the company's old Office assistant.
The attackers, who compromised the account for roughly 30 minutes, used the platform to give the token an appearance of legitimacy and directed attention towards the asset before the account owner regained control.
Microsoft has confirmed that it did not authorize, sponsor, or endorse any cryptocurrency connected to Clippy, Microsoft, or the MSFT ticker.
This incident is part of a broader pattern in which scammers borrow familiar brands, celebrities, or official accounts to create artificial credibility around new tokens.
Microsoft has secured its X account and is continuing to investigate how the compromise happened.
