Microsoft's X Account Hijacked for Nostalgia-Based Crypto Scam
Microsoft's X account was recently hijacked by attackers who used it to promote a fraudulent cryptocurrency called $Clippy token. The scam tied in with Clippy, Microsoft's virtual assistant that is shaped like a paperclip, and promised that if the token received 500,000 likes, Clippy would be brought back.
The attackers also falsely claimed that the Clippy token was paired with Microsoft's own stock (MSTF), although there was no legitimate connection between the two. The campaign was cleverly designed to exploit nostalgia, and even Microsoft's apology seemed fake at first.
This is not the first time Microsoft's X accounts have been targeted by hackers. In June 2024, Microsoft's India X account was hacked to promote a GameStop cryptocurrency pre-sale, which could potentially drain users' wallets.
