MicroStrategy's $22 Billion Debt Burden Threatens 'Never Sell' Principle

MicroStrategy's (MSTR.US) massive Bitcoin holding strategy has come under scrutiny in a recent report by Regime Intelligence. The company holds $22 billion in debt backed by its 840,447 Bitcoins, which is approximately 25 times the amount sold this year to repay debts and conduct share buybacks. However, the real risk for MicroStrategy lies not in sharp declines in Bitcoin prices but rather its ability to raise funds in capital markets.

Data compiled by Woofun AI indicates that even if Bitcoin prices were to drop by 96%, its reserves would still be sufficient to cover convertible bond repayment obligations. Nevertheless, the company must pay $1.76 billion in annual preferred dividends and interest, regardless of coin prices. This highlights the risk shift on the other side of MicroStrategy's balance sheet.

The report points out that MicroStrategy's main challenge lies in maintaining cash flow to service debt; its current cash reserves cover only 2.6 times its annual expenses, a safety cushion that appears thin amid macroeconomic uncertainty. The potential deterioration of the financing environment has led the company to begin selling Bitcoin to repay debts from other business operations.

According to Regime Intelligence, if Bitcoin prices fall over the long term and MicroStrategy's stock price and net asset value decline accordingly, the company will face a double squeeze of increasingly difficult and costly fundraising. In this scenario, preferred stock price volatility and cash reserve levels will become core indicators for assessing its solvency.
