MicroStrategy's $63 Billion Bitcoin Stash Faces Liquidity Pressure
MicroStrategy has amassed an impressive stash of Bitcoin (BTC) worth $63.727 billion as of August 31, 2026, consisting of 845,050 BTC. The company's aggressive buying strategy involves issuing convertible debt to fund these purchases, including a notable $2 billion 0% bond that matures on March 1, 2030.
The bond features an option for holders to convert their debt into shares if the stock price exceeds $433.43 per share. A put option also allows investors to demand $1,000 in cash on March 1, 2028, if the stock price remains below this threshold. MicroStrategy can force redemption of the bond if the stock trades above $996.89 after a specified date.
The company has sold $16.5 billion worth of shares in 2025, which contributes to its Bitcoin per share metric, even when share prices fluctuate. MicroStrategy's strategy is to buy BTC during price drawdowns, as seen on April 20 and May 18, 2026.
The company reported a net loss of $8.22 billion for the June 2026 quarter due to Bitcoin's falling price. However, this accounting loss did not involve a cash outflow since MicroStrategy retained most of its holdings.
