MicroStrategy's Bitcoin Treasury Sparks $80 Billion Trading Opportunity
Short seller James Chanos has highlighted what he calls an '$80 billion actionable spread' in MicroStrategy's Bitcoin treasury. This discrepancy occurs because the company's market capitalization is significantly lower than the value of its Bitcoin holdings.
MicroStrategy holds approximately 840,447 Bitcoins worth around $53.95 billion at current prices. In contrast, its market cap stands at roughly $34.4 billion. However, Chanos notes that this valuation gap does not represent a straightforward arbitrage opportunity due to various factors such as debt and preferred shares.
Chanos previously profited from a similar trade by shorting MicroStrategy shares and going long on Bitcoin but closed the position in late 2025. The company's Bitcoin balance has declined slightly due to sales, and ongoing financing and management risks mean the trade is not risk-free.
