MicroStrategy's Shift from Buyer to Seller Triggers Potential $7.5 Billion Selling Pressure on Bitcoin
MicroStrategy's (formerly Strategy) change in strategy from being one of the largest buyers to a seller has significant implications for the Bitcoin market. The company accumulated approximately $62 billion worth of Bitcoin, but is now selling some of its holdings to replenish its dollar reserves, pay preferred stock dividends and interest, and repurchase Digital Credit Securities.
The sale could potentially impact the market as one of the key structural buyers has turned into a seller. According to analyst estimates, MicroStrategy may still need to sell approximately $4.5 billion in Bitcoin over the next two to four months to reduce its STRC (Digital Credit Securities) balance from roughly $10 billion to $5 billion.
This selling pressure could continue for an extended period unless stronger macro catalysts emerge to drive a large-scale return of Bitcoin ETF buying, which may limit short-term rebounds. Additionally, the 'BTC Yield' model, driven by the NAV premium of treasury companies' stock prices relative to their Bitcoin holdings, is facing challenges as this premium narrows or turns into a discount.
Expanding NAV discounts could lead to potential selling pressure from other Bitcoin treasury companies, which collectively hold approximately $3 billion in Bitcoin. This combined potential selling could reach up to $7.5 billion over the coming months.
