Military Personnel Arrested in Alleged $8M Greek Crypto Scam
Greek authorities have cracked down on an alleged crypto pyramid scheme that promised investors doubled returns in just 50 days. The operation, which collected around $8 million from approximately 10,000 participants, was disguised as an artificial intelligence enthusiasts' association called the Hellenic Artificial Intelligence Team Association: AT Team Greece.
Police arrested 17 individuals on September 30, 2026, including nine military personnel and two non-commissioned officers who allegedly led the scheme. The investigation began after two anonymous tips were submitted in July 2026, leading to months of surveillance. Authorities froze withdrawals from the platform around September 1, 2026, which sparked complaints from participants.
The raid resulted in the seizure of approximately €295,090 in cash and numerous electronic devices. However, reported losses from victims totaled just €55,970, a stark contrast to the $8 million collected. The discrepancy may be due to participants' reluctance to report their involvement, as they stood to gain from recruitment bonuses.
The case highlights a growing trend of pyramid schemes in Greece, with previous operations in 2026 leading to arrests and seizures exceeding €14 million. The involvement of military personnel adds a layer of complexity, as their uniforms may have lent credibility to the scheme. The ongoing investigation will determine the final victim count and loss figures, as well as how Greek courts handle the two non-commissioned officers at the center of the operation.
