Minnesota Bans Crypto Kiosks to Fight Financial Scams

Minnesota state leaders have implemented a ban on cryptocurrency kiosks in an effort to curb scams. Starting this weekend, scammers will no longer be able to use these machines as a tool for financial deceit.

Crypto kiosks are essentially ATMs that allow users to buy or sell cryptocurrency using cash, according to Assistant Commissioner of Enforcement at the Minnesota Department of Commerce Sara Payne.

While the machines themselves are harmless, experts say they're perfect for scams because they enable quick conversion of cash into cryptocurrency and facilitate transfer beyond the reach of victims and law enforcement.

'Criminals value them because they allow cash to be converted quickly into cryptocurrency and moved beyond the reach of victims and law enforcement,' Payne said.

State leaders emphasize that there's no shame in falling victim to scams, as they're engineered to be convincing. Unfortunately, recovering stolen money is uniquely difficult due to the instantaneous nature of cryptocurrency transactions and their ease of transfer across borders.
