Minnesota Crypto ATM Ban Takes Effect Amid Scam Concerns

Minnesota's ban on cryptocurrency ATMs took effect August 1st, following nearly $1 million in reported losses from scams. The state's Department of Commerce had recorded 134 complaints related to crypto kiosks between 2023 and 2025, with total losses approaching that amount.

The new law prohibits businesses from installing, operating, or maintaining any virtual currency exchange machines within the state. Existing machines were required to stop processing transactions by August 1st, but operators have until December 31st to remove them from public view.

Residents can still buy, sell, and hold digital assets through lawful online services, but the ban aims to curb scams involving kiosks. The Department of Commerce is working with licensed money-service businesses to secure compliance, and officials warn residents to be cautious of scammers using fake family emergencies or romance schemes.

The state's action follows a trend of increased regulation on cryptocurrency ATMs. Tennessee banned them in July, while Georgia imposed transaction limits, warnings, and refund requirements. Indiana had already adopted a statewide prohibition.
