Mirae Asset Takes Majority Control of Korbit, Launches Digital X Platform
Mirae Asset Consulting has acquired majority control of Korbit, South Korea's oldest cryptocurrency exchange. The deal was worth approximately $102 million and gave Mirae Asset a 97.15% stake in the platform.
The acquisition was approved by the South Korean Fair Trade Commission on July 9, 2026, despite Korbit's relatively small market share of around 0.5%. Korbit is rebranding as Digital X, which will serve as an 'intelligent investment platform' combining research, investor education, and institutional-grade compliance systems.
Mirae Asset founder Park Hyeon-joo described the 'X' in Digital X as representing 'an uncharted future and the limitless possibilities created when different forms of value intersect and converge.' The company aims to link stablecoins, real-world assets, security token offerings, traditional securities, and digital assets on a single platform.
Digital X will not compete with Upbit or Bithumb on trading volume, but rather focus on infrastructure development. Mirae Asset has stated that the platform is built to connect Korbit's digital asset operations with its own securities and asset management background.
