Mirae Asset Unleashes Fee-Free Blitz on South Korea's Crypto Market
Mirae Asset Group is expanding its presence in South Korea's cryptocurrency market by offering customers one year of commission-free trading at Digital X, formerly known as Korbit. This move aims to challenge the dominance of market leaders Upbit and Bithumb.
The fee waiver applies to all trading fees for a year, which is a bold attempt to pull retail volume away from Upbit and Bithumb. Mirae Asset acquired Korbit earlier this year after clearing antitrust regulations, rebranding it as Digital X. This backing gives the exchange institutional credibility that smaller platforms lack.
Digital X plans to raise $145 million to $217 million in capital by the first quarter of next year to become a broader digital-finance platform. Mirae Asset's involvement brings a balance-sheet advantage over smaller rivals, as it operates across various financial sectors including securities, asset management, and investment banking.
The South Korean market is one of the most active retail crypto markets globally, and a sustained fee-free period could reshape where volume flows. Whether Digital X can convert this promotion into lasting share will depend on its liquidity, listings, and custody offering beyond the promotional window.
