mNAV Explained: Unlocking the Value of Bitcoin Treasury Companies
The mNAV valuation multiple is used to measure the difference between buying shares in a Bitcoin treasury company and buying Bitcoin itself. An mNAV of 1.0x means the company's market value is roughly in line with its Bitcoin holdings, while an mNAV of 1.5x implies investors are assigning $1.50 of company value for every $1 of Bitcoin.
The concept has become increasingly important as public companies accumulate larger BTC reserves. Strategy and Metaplanet are listed firms that have turned their corporate balance sheets into another route for gaining Bitcoin exposure.
However, not all mNAV calculations are created equal. There is no universally accepted formula, with different methods used to calculate the multiple. BitcoinTreasuries.net uses an enterprise-value version that takes debt and preferred stock into account, while Strategy uses its own per-share methodology.
The ability of a company to issue new shares at a premium can potentially increase the amount of Bitcoin backing each existing share, making it more attractive for investors. This capital-raising mechanism helped define Strategy's model, which has been successful in acquiring large amounts of BTC.
