Monero's Price Surge Not Just About Renewed Interest in Privacy Coins

Monero's price has risen by over 10% in recent weeks, but this surge is not necessarily due to a renewed interest in privacy coins. According to a closer look at Monero's price action and regulatory developments, the actual story is more complex.

The source of the price increase may be attributed to tighter KYC (Know Your Customer) rules pushing traders toward privacy-focused cryptocurrencies like Monero. However, this trend has been ongoing for some time, and the current surge in Monero's price can also be seen as a result of its own technical upgrade, Full Chain Membership Proofs (FCMP++), which is still in testing.

The FCMP++ upgrade aims to replace Monero's current sender-hiding system with proofs that reference the full chain, rather than a small decoy set. This would make transactions more secure and private, but also more difficult for regulators to track.

Regulatory pressure has indeed been increasing on privacy-focused cryptocurrencies like Monero, Zcash, and similar assets. The EU's Anti-Money Laundering Regulation 2024/1624 prohibits crypto-asset service providers from keeping anonymous accounts or accounts that increase transaction obfuscation, including through anonymity-enhancing coins.

While this regulation may push users toward smaller exchanges and less compliant services, it does not necessarily give investigators a better view of transactions. In fact, the opposite might be true: as liquidity gets thinner on large exchanges, price movements can become sharper and more unpredictable.
