MoonPay Launches Seoul Hub for Won-Backed Stablecoin Push

Share

MoonPay has announced the launch of its Korean subsidiary, MoonPay Korea, in Seoul. This move marks a significant step for the global cryptocurrency payments provider as South Korea seeks to establish itself at the forefront of won-backed stablecoin development.

The partnership with Woori Bank and the KRW Stablecoin Consortium aims to drive growth in this area by enabling cross-border settlement, distribution, wallet access, and conversion services for stablecoins pegged to the Korean won. This approach reflects a growing trend in stablecoin development, where the focus is shifting from direct token issuance to building robust merchant, on-ramp, and off-ramp infrastructure.

MoonPay emphasized that its Korean subsidiary will not operate its own stablecoin but instead serve as a settlement and distribution platform. The company aims to facilitate global settlement and merchant adoption for bank-issued stablecoins, rather than offering its own coins to the market.
