Morgan Stanley Launches Digital Asset Lab for Blockchain Innovation
Morgan Stanley has established a digital asset lab to experiment with technologies like stablecoins, tokenization, and decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. The lab is part of a broader network of research hubs focused on areas such as electronic trading, cybersecurity, and machine learning. Teams dedicated to these labs operate across multiple cities, including New York, Glasgow, and Bangalore, collaborating with specialists from the bank.
The digital asset lab aims to explore how blockchain-based systems can be integrated into Morgan Stanley's operations. Amy Oldenburg, the bank's head of digital assets, emphasizes that the lab provides a secure and compliant environment to test emerging digital asset technologies without risking the broader platform.
One of the key areas of focus is DeFi vaults, which are pools of assets that use blockchain software to automatically deploy capital based on predefined strategies. Investors deposit assets like stablecoins into these vaults, which then allocate funds across various DeFi markets. Oldenburg notes that while DeFi vaults could be part of the future, the technology is still too nascent to implement widely.
Megan Brewer, who leads market innovation and labs at Morgan Stanley, highlights the collaborative nature of the lab teams, which work closely with experts across different locations to advance the bank's digital asset initiatives.
