Morgan Stanley Taps into Blockchain with New Digital Asset Lab

Share

Morgan Stanley has established a Digital Asset Lab to test blockchain tools and digital assets safely within existing financial systems. The lab will focus on stablecoin payments, tokenized deposits, central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), and decentralized finance (DeFi) vaults.

The lab is designed as a separate entity from Morgan Stanley's core systems, meeting regulatory requirements while allowing the bank to study new tools under controlled conditions. Amy Oldenburg, head of digital assets at Morgan Stanley, described the lab as 'a safe and ring-fenced environment' for testing.

Morgan Stanley will test stablecoin payments, which can automate parts of the process and management similar to traditional investment funds. The bank is also examining DeFi vault technology, which can automatically move deposited digital assets across different DeFi markets following pre-set strategies.

The Digital Asset Lab comes as Morgan Stanley continues expanding its digital asset business, including offering cryptocurrency trading through E*Trade this year.
