Most Americans Think It's Wrong for Trump to Profit from Cryptocurrency
A new poll from Reuters/Ipsos found that most Americans believe it is inappropriate for President Trump to profit from cryptocurrency while he is in office. The survey, which took place August 14-17 and featured 1,166 respondents, showed that 63% of respondents thought it was inappropriate for the president and his family to profit from cryptocurrency.
The poll comes amid concerns raised by top Senate Democrats about Trump's crypto-related income. Last month, they went after him for over $1 billion in cryptocurrency-related income he reported last year, pushing for probes into potential national security consequences of the president's digital asset holdings.
Trump's financial disclosures showed that he made around $594 million from a crypto venture called World Liberty Financial, which he started with his sons two years ago. He also made another $635 million in connection with his meme coin. Senators Elizabeth Warren, Richard Blumenthal, Gary Peters, Dick Durbin, and Ron Wyden cited the income as sources of concern.
When questioned about the large profits from cryptocurrency seen in his financial disclosure forms, Trump denied any illegality and stated 'I could know about it. I didn’t. There’s nothing illegal. There’s nothing wrong with it I could know.'
