Mow Suggests Renaming Hardware Wallets to 'Bitcoin Signing Devices'
Samson Mow, an entrepreneur and Bitcoin advocate, is proposing a change to the term 'hardware wallet.' He wants to rename it to 'Bitcoin Signing Device' (BSD) to correct a common misconception among new Bitcoin users.
Mow's proposal aims to clarify that Bitcoin exists on the blockchain, not in the hardware device itself. The device only stores private keys required for transaction authorization. This distinction is crucial because many people mistakenly believe their Bitcoin is stored inside the wallet.
Hardware wallets act like dedicated tools for managing keys and signing transactions. When a user wants to send Bitcoin, the device uses the private key to sign the transaction, which can then be sent to the Bitcoin network. Even if the device breaks or is unplugged, the Bitcoin remains safe on the blockchain.
Mow's proposed name may seem like a minor wording issue, but it could help users understand self-custody better. Users should focus on creating secure backups of their recovery phrases and understanding how to recover their wallets in case something goes wrong.
