MSTR Soars 17% on Bitcoin Rally, But Volatility Looms
Strategy Inc. (MSTR) shares surged by 17% last week to their highest level since April, outperforming Bitcoin's rally above $80,000. The stock has been acting as a leveraged proxy for Bitcoin, and its price movement is closely tied to the cryptocurrency's performance.
The company's Executive Chairman Michael Saylor posted a chart of Strategy's purchase history on September 20, showing that they still hold 845,050 BTC at an average cost of $75,412. This has sparked speculation about whether Saylor's 'orange' chart is a sign of new purchases or simply a mark-to-market update.
While the recent rally in MSTR may be attributed to the company's Bitcoin holdings and the favorable policy environment, investors should exercise caution as the stock remains exposed to significant volatility. If Bitcoin were to fall below Strategy's cost basis, the same leverage that produced the 17% gain could quickly turn into a loss.
The House Financial Services Committee's passage of H.R. 8957, which would create a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, has also contributed to the recent rally in crypto-linked stocks like MSTR. However, this bill still needs to pass the Senate and receive a signature from the President before it becomes law.
