Mt. Gox CEO's Plan to Recover $5B in Stolen Funds Spurned by Bitcoin Community
Former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès submitted a proposal to Bitcoin Core over the weekend that would have redirected approximately $5 billion worth of frozen BTC to a recovery address controlled by Mt. Gox trustees.
The proposal, which consisted of just under 60 lines of code, aimed to hard-code a consensus rule change allowing a designated recovery key to override the current controller of the theft address, effectively bypassing existing protocol.
However, the pull request was auto-closed within 17 hours due to procedural reasons, and contributors cited substantive objections from Mt. Gox creditors who rejected the proposal publicly.
The core argument against the proposal centered on maintaining Bitcoin's consensus model, which was designed to eliminate discretionary boundaries between justified exceptions and general confiscation mechanisms.
