Mt. Gox CEO's Plan to Rewrite Bitcoin's Code Rejected by Community

Mark Karpelès, former CEO of Mt. Gox, attempted to rewrite Bitcoin's code to recover $5 billion in stolen funds. He submitted a pull request over the weekend that would have redirected 79,956 BTC, frozen since 2011, to a Mt. Gox trustee recovery address.

The proposal was met with swift rejection from the community within 17 hours. Karpelès listed his own objections in the proposal, including that the theft is unambiguous and a Japan court-supervised legal framework for distribution already exists.

The core argument against the proposal was that it would set a precedent for modifying Bitcoin's consensus rules to benefit specific groups. The network has been modified in emergency situations before, but this situation was different - the proposal asked the network to operate differently for one group.
