Mt Gox's $3B Bitcoin Hoard Still Unresolved
More than a decade after its collapse in 2014, Mt. Gox still holds nearly $3 billion in Bitcoin. According to on-chain data from Arkham, the defunct exchange's wallets currently hold 34,387.51 BTC, worth around $2.88 billion. This is a significant amount of money for a company that stopped operating before many current crypto traders were even active.
The remaining balance is part of a much larger recovery effort. After Mt. Gox's collapse, the estate recovered close to 200,000 BTC. However, the current balance represents only the portion still awaiting distribution. The trustee overseeing the repayment effort has set a final creditor repayment deadline of October 31, 2026.
The wallets have not been inactive. In June 2026, more than 10,400 BTC moved internally between estate-linked addresses. This transfer was worth around $739 million at the time and sparked some interest among traders. However, it was largely seen as custodial housekeeping rather than a sell order.
