Musk Backs AI Traffic Surge Forecast as Stablecoins Prepare for Micropayment Demand

Cloudflare's forecast that AI agents will exceed human traffic by a factor of 1,000 within five years has gained traction from Elon Musk. He endorsed the projection on X, calling it 'accurate' and stating that bandwidth demand will increase massively due to AI and robotics.

Musk believes that SpaceX's Starlink is uniquely positioned to carry this surge in traffic, citing next-generation satellites with many times the throughput of current models. However, he did not mention cryptocurrency or payments at all.

Cloudflare's Chief Financial Officer, Thomas Seifert, projects machine traffic will surpass human levels within five years, driving the need for new payment solutions like stablecoins. The company behind the forecast is addressing this issue with its open payment protocol x402, designed for micropayments in tokens such as USDC on Base.

Cloudflare has built two products on top of x402: the Monetization Gateway and Cloudflare Wallets. These tools enable websites and API providers to charge callers per request in stablecoins, allowing AI agents to pay for data, inference, APIs, or content autonomously within limits set by their human owners.
