Musk's Grok Dominates Coinbase Agent Trading Volume by Nearly 40:1
Coinbase's data for September 14-21 shows that Grok, an AI bot created by Elon Musk, dominated trading volume among its agents, accounting for a staggering 59.5% of all activity. This is nearly 40 times the share of ChatGPT, which came in at just 1.5%. The chart also revealed that Claude, another popular chatbot, accounted for 13.4% of agent volume.
Grok's success may be attributed to its presence within the X platform, where crypto traders already spend their time. This proximity makes it easy for users to transition from reading market threads to instructing Grok to take action. Additionally, a small number of large traders using Grok could have skewed the results.
Coinbase has expanded its agent trading capabilities to include U.S. stocks and ETFs, offering thousands of listed names with 24/5 trading, fractional shares from $1, and zero commissions through Coinbase Capital Markets Corp. Agents can pay for their transactions via x402, a micropayment protocol that has processed over 230 million transactions and seen over $54 million in volume.
The exchange also introduced Grok Bot Creator Rewards, a pilot program that pays bot builders every two weeks based on usage. One creator reportedly earned $500 in the first two weeks of the program.
