A mysterious individual destroyed $8.3 million worth of Bitcoin in May 2026 by sending it to a burn address, but recent blockchain analysis has shed some light on the owner's activities.

According to research by Bennet, the coins were sent from five near-identical wallets that were first funded in April 2014, when Bitcoin traded at around $364. The wallets appeared to operate on a rotational basis, with each one sending Bitcoin to an exchange until its activity stopped, then another taking over.

The analysis found 'strong indicators of common ownership' across the five wallets and traced most of the funds back to Mt. Gox, suggesting the owner was an early adopter.
