Mystery Owner of $6M Base Vault Remains Elusive After Heist
A mysterious heist has left a $6 million hole in a Base vault, with the identity of the owner remaining unknown. On October 4, security firms detected an exploit unfolding on the vault, with $2.02 million already gone. Within 40 minutes, the loss had ballooned to $6 million, with 1,783 wstETH out of the vault traced by security firms.
The strange part of the story is that no protocol has claimed the vault, and its apparent controller is a 3-of-7 Safe whose seven signers remain unidentified. Onchain records point to a Safe created about 324 days ago, which requires three of seven signatures to act.
Security firms have not implicated Aave's core contracts in the heist, and Base itself was not hacked. The vault's owner still hasn't come forward, leaving a multimillion-dollar crime scene without a publicly known owner.
